Brayden's Catch

After using some strong coercion to get Brayden on the boat with us yesterday, he managed to reel in the catch of the day. The boys and I enjoyed a "Fall" day on the IRL. To us that means a slight chill in the air as we get up to speed on the boat at sunrise, a sun at midday that doesn't force you into the water for relief, enjoying the beauty of the first light on the river without getting up at 3am, and active fish that are eager to eat. To those that can't live without apple picking and colorful trees, we concede, your "Fall" has is moments, but we're very happy to borrow your sweaters and bushel baskets when we visit.....we know what's coming.

We missed the island's namesake as the Cheek family headed out on the boat for our fall excursion to spend the day on the spoil islands in the IRL. Everyone enjoyed the day once we found a "bug-free" spot to enjoy lunch and swim. Maybe we'll get Samantha back next summer and we can visit with everyone again.

Coastal Charities Fishing Tournament

Great Year again! We increased participation in a year when most tournaments are down, we gave away thousands of dollars in prizes and food including two new kayaks from Hobie and Malibu. We netted over $7,000 for the charity and we're planning to run a week long paddle and fishing day camp in the summer of 2011 to introduce kids to kayaking and the Indian River Lagoon. Special thanks to all our followers that supported us again in 2010. Phew....now I can get back to work on planning for 2011.

Frog Log Dominance

Since the first week of school, Brayden has been talking about his "Frog Log" and how he gets to keep the Frog Log if he reads the most in his class. The boy sets his mind to something and it's game over.

Each little frog sticker is an hour of reading.....I imagine there are some choice words being shared at lunch over strawberry milk and fruit roll-ups about "that Brayden kid". The kid just loves books...thanks Aunt Lauren. Way to go Brayden! By the way...that's just 2 full weeks of Frog Logging if you're doing the math.

Yet again, Alex outfishes Dad. We missed a particularly large Snook in the early am that would have completed the slam today. I did account for a solid 18" in trout, but Alex took the prize as he hooked the Snook and the Red. He fought the Snook like a champ, but the fish won the day. By the size of that fish, it wasn't his first rodeo, unfortunately for Alex, it was his. This nice fat redfish will be blackened for the dinner table tonight.

Surf Fishing

The boys and I spent 7 hours a the beach yesterday! Perfect day with a nice sea breeze keeping everything cool. We started the day fishing and ended playing in the surf with some great friends. Alex caught his first Jack Crevalle, a tough fighting fish that can grow to well over 40lbs. Don't overlook this little one's size, JCs are some of the hardest fighting fish in the ocean. A larger one kept me on my kayak for well over an hour one day before I could bring him to the boat. This one took a live white bait (ocean minnow, so to speak). There's a little finesse in casting light tackle in the surf, and while Alex didn't cast this time, he did bait the hook, set the hook and fight the fish back to shore. Enjoy...

Great day on the water with Dad and Alex....of course Alex get's the winning fish. No help from me on this one. He's baiting the hook, casting the lure, setting the hook and bringing the fish to the boat. In this case, the last of those tasks was the most difficult as this particular gaff-top was not the least bit interested in the seeing the inside of the boat. The kid's got a knack for it!

We always have fun catching fish, but there comes a point when we try to hone our craft and go after some targeted fish. On the 5th, Alex and I headed out to the Indian River with a goal of trout and redfish. While we didn't catch our goal, it was for good reason. The trout bite was so good, we just fished until our arms fell off. Tally was well over 30 fish. Here's Alex with his biggest of the day. Needless to say, Alex is ready to go again. Fish On!

A calm fell over the Cheek house last night as a part of our summer that was missing has finally arrived. Most, if not all of our followers have met Samantha, Jennifer's niece (really, her cousin once removed) from Michigan. A flower girl in our wedding, we really got to know Samantha over last summer break when she agreed to live with us for 8 weeks and take care of the boys. It couldn't have worked out better. It went so well we invited her to vacation with us in Nags Head, NC last year and last night we picked her up from the airport for "Summer in Melbourne, Part II". We only have 4 short weeks with her this summer, but I'm sure we'll make the most of it. Thanks to Michigan for sharing Sam with us for the next four weeks. We'll send her back safe and sound.

Alex breaks Dad's Streak!

It was bound to happen sooner or later. I'm certainly not trying to make a living on the water and I don't enter tournaments that often. Once or twice a year I'll test my skill and well, let's just say I've yet to make it on the leaderboard.

This weekend the boys and I fished in the "4 Kids" charitable event out of Treasure Coast Marina and Sponsored by our friends at the the Strike Zone. When you're fishing with a 7 and 8 year old, you hope for best, but expect only to have a fun day on the water. We did manage to start fishing by 7:30, not too bad considering we had to drive an hour to get to the ramp. On our first stop we got into some trout, but none big enough for the scales. Around 9:30 we shifted gears and headed to the channel, Ladyfish was a category and I was crossing my fingers that a few would be around. We struggled, but managed to get one in the boat for Alex before the boys became intrigued by a large shoal with many boats and kids wading near the inlet in 6-8" of water. We stopped and played there for about an hour before we made one last shot. We headed under the bridge, and it was catfish heaven. While we were there I learned that jumping in the water after a fishing pole with your self-inflating life vest on is not a bad way to test it's functionality. Let's just say those catfish pull a good bit harder than anything else the boys have caught, especially in a current!

So, we headed back to the marina with a catfish (ugliest fish contest) for Brayden and a Ladyfish for Alex. As it turns out, Ladyfish were a tougher target that day than we knew. Only 5 or 6 kids out the 50 competing brought one in and Alex's was in 2nd place at the end of the day! He brought home a new rod and reel along with a great trophy and broke my spell of tournaments without an award. Maybe Alex and Brayden are my good luck charms for future events? At the very least, it's a great excuse to test that theory!

Author's Note: Brayden's catfish was trumped by the ugliest glob of a want to be squid turned into mud-pie that I've ever seen. It was actually alive and breathing or I would have assumed the gulf oil spill had made it to the sebastian inlet. Even Brayden admitted "that thing is ugly Dad, I'm not going to win"

What a wonderful week at "Windswept" in Summerland Key. We would highly recommend this great little cottage. Summerland is not a high tourist area, but has a local fish market, a couple restaurants and a nice little "gourmet" grocery. While the produce left a bit to be desired, anything you wanted in a bottle or can was available. With a Winn Dixie only two keys to the East (6 miles), we never had to go far to get anything we needed.

After a tough Tarpon trip in Tampa last week (only one fish), I was a little bummed about how the regular season was coming along. Decided to head out on Friday and try to turn the tide before the family heads to the Keys and what I consider to be the Spring Fishing Playoffs. Little mahi moved through about two weeks ago and the reports were decent but not great for the bigger ones. Not the biggest Mahi ever caught on "My Escape", but it was PR for me. This little 28# mahi was a nice way to end the day! Thanks to Brian, Greg and our new friend Dave for a great day.

Brayden's second trip to NOLA, but the first wasn't nearly as exciting given it was 8 years ago and he was "in-belly". The boys enjoyed a day in the French quarter at the Aquarium, eating beignets and lunch with Mark, Shelly, Julie, Claudia and Brooke. Then we were off to see all the sites on Bourbon St......that may have been one stop too many.

We didn't make the drive, but the view from the house was simply amazing. This picture is from Dec 2006 and the only night launch we saw from KSC. My greatest regret with launches is spending energy and time taking pics and video and generally not enjoying the event, so this morning I simply watched. A little early for the boys (4:13am), but well worth missing 45 mintues of sleep to see what will likely be the last night launch of the space shuttle. Without taking too many steps towards political commentary, it's unfortunate that we will take even one day away from manned space exploration. Regardless of where we launch from or what vehicle we go in, we should continue to explore. Being fortunate enough to watch this in person simply reminds me of the sheer power and importance of manned space flight. It's one of the most awe inspiring events you will ever witness.

Cold and blustery couldn't keep us away. While we were hoping for the post cold front, aggressive bite, we got the post really cold front, dead fish lock jaw fishing trip. Managed to get each guy a fish on separate weekend trips, but it was tough going. Looking forward to long sunny days again where we see more fish in the boat than dead from cold stress. That cold snap really put a beat down on our fish and wildlife. We had a great time exploring islands, checking out the birds and splashing through the waves.

A real Fall in Florida

While the week of freezing temperatures brought rough times for many animals, plants and fish, it did have at least one upside. The boys enjoyed a day outside yesterday that actually felt like fall. Temps in low 60s, leaves falling from the trees, lots of browns, oranges and yellows in the landscaping. We get the falling leaves from time to time on the two Maples(transplants from Mr. Rich's move from NY), but it's usually accompanied by beautiful flowering plants and green lush foilage. This year, for at least one day, felt like Fall all around.

The Unthinkable

While I get that few people will have sympathy for the "cold" weather we've endured here over the last week, I have to make some comments. Florida people, animals, plants,etc...don't understand, like or know how to deal with cold weather. Although you may find our complaining trivial; really, how bad can 29 degrees be? Simply put, things stop living when it gets too cold down here. In addition to landscaping damage, many fish, animals, birds and reptiles can't live in these temperatures. I don't remember a day since we've moved to Melbourne (Jacksonville was a different story) when the temp didn't get above 40 and usually 50 at some point during the day. While we would occasionally get down to or just below 32 over the past 7 years, it was only for a matter of minutes at any one time. You can count the hours on two hands. So given we didn't break 35 on Saturday, have had a week straight of subfreezing temps at night and actually saw frozen puddles on the road Sunday morning, it's been a very unusual weather event.
On a positive note, we're all bundled up and doing fine, Tucker wastes no time when "doing his business", the owners of the iceplex where Brayden skates probably saved $1,500 on their utilities this month, and the boys saw snow! For about 10 minutes on Saturday we progressed from falling slush, to sleet to actual snowflakes. No accumulation or notable flurries, but snow flakes none the less. Gaylord Palms...if there's one close to you, it's a great time. Entire conference hall with ice sculptures, igloos, ice ornaments, even an all ice nativity scene. Hand carved and absolutely amazing. A bit pricey, but if you live in FL and walk the dog in shorts and a t-shirt on Christmas day, it's well worth the $$ to feel cold for an hour.

Tough end to the Season

Brayden played in the Championship Game for his Hockey League tonight. The game was the best of the season and Brayden had one of his best efforts. Braydens Redwings were up by 2 with 8 minutes left to go in the game when the Blackhawks squeaked one into the net. With just 2 minutes left, the Blackhawks did it again and tied the game. The Redwings had a chance to take the lead with seconds left, but couldn't make it happen. The goalie play on both sides was amazing with lots of great shots getting denied and many parents sighing in the bleachers. In sudden death penalty shots, the Blackhawks scored and the Redwings just couldnt answer. The Blackhawks skated around the rink with the cup while the Redwing locker room was filled with tears...I guess when you dont get a medal just for showing up, the kids take it a little more seriously. Many Mom and Dads "coaching" their little guys on how to walk out of the locker room with heads held high. I told Brayden that it is just an unfortunate part of being an Ohio Sports fan, so close, but so far away!

Congrats to my sis and her husband on the delivery of their baby boy! Andrew Michael Keach was born last night just before 11:00. He weighs in at 7 pounds, 11 oz with a full head a hair. Everyone is healthy and happy. While the boys were somewhat disappointed their choice of names were
overlooked (Aniken, Rainwater or Bob), the excitement was clear when Alex exclaimed, " we're going to be cousins and not kids anymore!"

Great job Lauren, Mike and Andrew. We're so proud of you guys and excited to watch you take on this rewarding new journey in your life.

Stimulating the Economy

The Cheek family is doing their best to get this economy up and running again. It's been 8 years or so since we've owned a boat....funny how that happens to coincide with the age of my oldest child... anyway, we're back in action. We found a nice little boat last month and took the plunge. This 16' Carolina Skiff passed the first family test two weekends ago when we headed out into the river for a little 20 mile cruise down to a spoil island just North of the Sebastian Inlet. We brought beach towels, lunch and fishing poles and had a great time splashing around!

The big question is, did he really expect boys to come to a skating party or did he think, "the girls will really dig this this!" One of the Moms actually asked Brayden to do more backwards skating.....he's already making nice with the girl's moms and he doesn't even know what he's doing.

In all reality, there were 2 boys at the party and Brayden had a fantastic day skating around with his friends. Very few had skated before, but as amazing as kids are, they nearly all were skating w/o help by the end of the day. We all had a great time!

The Amazing Tooth

The amazing part is that our 8 year old finally lost his first tooth! With that being said, there are at least 3 more the tooth fairy has on her 30 day pick up list. Poor Alex is eating a good amount of soup these days with his front 4 pretty much out of action.

I can't find the hockey shots and will have to get the kids up soon, so look for those tomorrow. Fall is in full swing as we hit temps in the low 50's overnight. Brrrrrr....thin blooded Florida kids can't handle it. Not to worry, it should bounce back to the low 70s with highs in the mid 80s soon. Love this time of year!

Little Tikes (thumbs up)

In the hopes no other child might have to deal with Daddy and a hack saw, I shot Little Tikes a quick email to tell them what happened. I didn't ask for a thing, just told them what happened and asked them to look into making a design change. Frankly, I told them Brayden is probably too old for the toy and should have known better. Someone from customer service called within 24 hours to talk to me. They apologized for the accident, said they would send a part to replace the piece that was damaged and offered to send a toy to Brayden for his troubles. While I am often insistent on fair consideration for my troubles, in this case I have to emphasize that Little Tikes was all about making this right without a single request from us. Two days after the call we received a letter confirming the offer and apologizing for the mishap.
In a world where we so often see companies shifting blame and wiggling out using fine print, I applaud Little Tikes for their customer friendly customer service.

SAW 6....no, just Hacksaw 1

I was heading home from Orlando on Thursday and got a call from Jen....somewhat more distressed than usual. It was also 3:30, when she should have been sleeping, so I was a bit concerned.

The boys have a Little Tykes workbench with a small hole in the bench that holds a lantern hook. The hole is, of course just a fraction smaller than Brayden's index finger. You've probably figured out where this is going. Brayden stuck his finger through and couldn't get it out. The plastic was too thick to do much and the fire station was the next option, but we thought a shot with the hack saw might get through.

I've never seen Brayden quite so concerned. As a parent of a child who at the age of 7 is often one step ahead of you, his concern was a nice reminder that as a parent your kids still need you and have to trust you. A quick strafe of my hand with the saw and Brayden was on board.

I made a couple cuts, it relieved the tension and out popped the finger. Yey...

While I never would have guessed that using a hacksaw to free my kid's finger would be one of the coolest things I've done as a Dad, I have to admit, I'm riding a pretty solid Dad high right now and trying not to feel to guilty about it.

Indian River Paddle Classic

We did it! Last weekend we ran the first catch, photo and release "paddle only" fishing tournament in Brevard County. It was a huge success with 47 paddlers, $6,500 in prizes and raffles, catering by a local restaurant and the awards ceremony at the Zoo. We were able to raise 100% of the operating funds from outside donations, so approximately $4,500 or 100% of the registration fees, raffle ticket money and money collected for beverage sales during the event is going to go directly to charitable causes the support youth involvement in the Indian River Lagoon. What an exciting weekend and event. Special thanks to our long distance fisherman! Brent flew in from Mass and Jeff from Virginia to help out for the first year. Brent took home a new fishing rod and hat to boot. I'm already looking forward to next year.

For those that have not met my brother in law, he comes from pretty competitive family and never passes up a challenge. (enter funny comment about Lauren here). This past weekend he competed in his first full length Ironman! Yes folks, that's 2.4 miles of swimming, a 112 mile bike and little 26.2 mile run. We're all pretty proud of your efforts and wanted to tell you that being a dad should be a piece of cake after that....hah!. Jennifer, Alex, Brayden and I enjoyed following your progress all day yesterday and raised a glass in your honor when you finished.

Summer of 2009....What a great summer. Driving to Chicago, Michigan and Ft. Wayne, trips to the beach, a shuttle launch, Virginia, Kings Dominion, sight seeing and a wonderful dinner with our best friends in DC. Phew.

So, tomorrow the kids head back to school. Pictures to follow. I'm sure Jen will take the standard "kids with lunch box in the front yard" or "kids with back pack by the pool" and we'll get them all up.

But the summer will certainly be best remembered by a great new friendship we developed. Our idea to get Jennifer's cousin down from Michigan to spend the summer with us turned out to be a great success. Samantha made an impact on all of us, was a great friend to the entire family (immediate and extended..Jane, Barbara, etc...) and will be missed by all. Mommy had to work, but somehow we made it through the 78 degree, breezy evening at the baseball stadium w/o her. The pic might come out a little small. Coastal Charities Up and Running

There must have been a healthy school of cats sitting off the end of our friends dock. The boys tossed the shrimp in, counted to 10 and had a fish on. They probably caught about 5 or 6 each before we arn out of bait. Great Memorial Day fishing trip.

Ahh.... Spring in Florida

Once everything is growing, humidity sets in, birds are everywhere, Pelicans diving on the beach....and bay crabs float into Tampa. The last being the most important for this story. When the tide starts carrying crab, those that eat crab are on the prowl. And, for 3 to 4 hours on the outgoing tide of the full and new moons, those that eat crab, eat them voraciously. The exciting part of this fishery is the constant action with boat after boat hooking up and fish dancing across the water. The unfortunate part is when your playing with giants, that 3 hour window gets very short. You don't exactly tell a 130# fish to hurry up and get to the boat to go catch more.
As you can guess, I was lucky enough to experience that event yesterday. We cancelled a couple weeks back, so a spattering tough weather (see pics) was not going to stop me. I made the drive over to Tampa and we were scooping crabs by 1:30. By 2:30 we were on site and by 3:15 we were hooked up. We went 3 for 5 for the day with two fish over 130#s. I caught two, one of the larger brutes and the "little" 80# fish that's jumping in the pics below. My arm still hurts. If there was a downside to the day, we never got the trophy shot. Combination of sloppy water, only two guys on the boat and a camera that takes too long to focus and shoot. None the less, it was a fabulous day and an experience that will have to be repeated. I just need to find these fish on the East Coast!

I've got two words for you ...... Uncle Larry!
OK, it may take a little more explanation for some. Brayden and Alex are both in loose tooth world right now. Brayden had two on the bottom and Alex two on the top. Well, the corn on the cob last night loosened one of Brayden's up enough to put "extraction" on the table. Add that with the one day visit from Jen's Uncle Larry and Aunt Nancy and you've got trouble! The two on the bottom were so crowded that when the first one came out, the second was hanging by a thread, so out it came as well. Or, maybe Uncle Larry's fingers were too big to grab just one. Either way, Brayden took a huge lead in the missing tooth game last night going from one half to two and a half in a matter of minutes. The first one being thanks to the tile floor two years ago, so it only counts for 1/2!

Sports Week of WOWs!

ALEX AND HIS GOALS....
So, we've figured out that a good 10 minutes of focus time between Dad and Alex makes for a much better game. Two weeks ago, we made it to the field just in time for Alex to "warm up" with the team and we were treated to a great game of star searching, butterfly chasing and what you might imagine would happen on the soccer field when Alex is far more concerned about the ice pop than the ball. So good to be a kid. BUT, it is way too frustrating for Dad. So, this week we hit the field a little early and just worked on running at Dad and taking the ball. That's all, no pep talk, very little coaching, just running to the ball. Ahhhh, the results! TWO GOALS! One of the two he really had to work for and get past a defender to score....and more importantly we had a kid that was more focused on the game than the clouds. Clouds are fun, but at 7 the kids are getting good enough that day dreaming can be a bit dangerous.

BRAYDEN'S FIRST HAT-TRICK
Brayden keeps flopping back and forth between the advanced skaters and intermediate skaters in mini-mite games. He's not quite ready for the advanced team, but it's good for him to try and play at that speed. Tonight, coach gave him a break and let him run with the intermediate kids. Equally good as he gets to carry the puck more and can get back on defense in time to block shots. He also has a much better chance to score goals. He had multiple attempts and connected on 3! His shinning moment was the slap shot that came off the ice and over the defenders stick into the goal. (I may be embellishing just a bit, maybe the shot bounced off his stick and bounced again over the defender's stick, but what's a Dad to do?, the puck did get off the ice). It was a great night and a nice show for Grandma and Grandpa Cleghorn.

It's all Relative

We love this time of year not only for the wonderful weather, but the many visits from friends and relatives. We're looking forward to Jennifer's parent's arrival this week and a first time visit from Aunt Nancy and Uncle Larry the following.

With everything going on it's difficult to stop and remember what's happening around the world during these difficult times. Jennifer has family that serve in Bontoc, Philippines in the Youth With a Mission program through Cornerstone Community Church. It's not that there aren't issues to be concerned about right now the in great US of A, but we don't have rebels fighting the military and helicopters landing so frequently it's difficult to conduct daily business. Please keep Thomas, Lisa, Alanya, Adriana, Alexie and Annalise in your thoughts and prayers not only for the wonderful work they do, but for the unrest in the region at this time. Wii Showdown....Grandparent Style

So Grandma and Grandpa were in Chicago visiting with the Big City dwellers and thought it might be fun to get in on a little of this Wii action with the grandkids. After all, they're only 6 and 7, how good could they be?
There was great anticipation as Fuzz, Player, Squakasaur and Zander lined up for the first match. Engines roared, smack talk echoed from the speakers of iPhones and they were off.

There were certainly moments when the races were interesting (for the first 100 yards) and times that the boys felt threatened by the experience and skill of the Ft. Wayne driving team (on the starting line). The races were close (until the end of the first lap) and sweat poured from the boys brows (from all the celebrating), but in the end it was the little Cheek boys (terror on wheels team) that made their entry (through the gate they built)to the world of Mario Kart Wii know to all on this day. They look forward to the next challenge (beatdown) and hope that the City Folk can bring their A game (only game) again.

In fairness, Squaky and Zander were defeated a couple times. It was usually b/c their Dad wanted to get into the action. The boys, being well aware of records, point accumulation and the thrill of winning, did not let Dad play for long. If only there were scholarships for Wii play, I might open up the game for practice during the week. But, for now it's a weekend only event, looked forward too so much that Friday has been re-named Super Wiiday in our house. Ahhhh... to be 6 again.

Fun Weekend

Another sign that Spring is here in full.....reverse migration. Yes, all you poor folks still dealing with cold NE weather making your way down South to enjoy a taste of what's to come, albeit months from now, in your world. We, of course, love this part of spring as much and more than any part of the year less our first beach day. The first beach day is a cherished and celebrated event that puts the entire family in a great mood in light of the many trips that lie ahead. Anyway, back to friends and family.

My folks firmed up plans this week for their visit in late April. Jennifer's folks were on the phone finalizing plans for their Easter pilgrimage to Daytona with Nancy and Larry. And, we had a surprise visit from our good friend Jeff. Although we razed him about leaving the better 2/3rds of his family in DC, that was apparently not his doing and promised a return trip with Mer and Sam. I told him the more clients he can pick up in FL, the better. We love the company. We enjoyed sharing the hustle of a Cheek family weekend with him and look forward to seeing the whole family in months to come.

Little else to comment on, my March Madness bracket, picked in the waning minutes of time prior to tip off of the first game and with "0" research has proven strong through the first couple rounds. Not a minute of reading led me to believe I would yet again have a slightly rough go at it this year. I'm not known for making it too far past the sweet 16 with any hope of winning. I think this bodes well for the "throw a dart" method used for this years analysis. I will admit I was a homer in some areas, mostly in the finals picking UNC (rough choice given I pretty much bet chalk to the end). Go Heels. Still remember a few trips to UNC from the burg hoping to extend a weekend with Kipp to watch UNC play in the championship game. That was decidedly driven by my desire to be on campus when such a big game was celebrated. What a party that must be! I wouldn't know since it never happened during my college tenure. Regardless, with no connection to any other school, it was an easy pick.

Busy weeks ahead, but little going on in the family. Steady diet of soccer, hockey and swimming for us. Mix in a little zoo and that takes care of it. Keep your fingers crossed that I might sneak out to hunt a redfish or two. Catch up with everyone again soon.

Soccer Superstar

Alex scored his second goal of the season yesterday. Our kid that "loves soccer", which we've always interpreted as loves getting a treat after the game and trophy at the end of the season, may have taken a new step. His goal included a couple dribbles, a blocked first shot, and a second shot over the head of the defender into the net. I gave him a standing O! Nothing better than a proud papa! We're proud of him no matter how he plays, but it sure is fun when does something cool.

Spring is in the air

A couple weeks ago it was just a promise of things to come. This weekend we celebrate the 2nd Sat and Sun of 80 degree highs and 60 degree lows. As expected the lawn will need some attention, but that also means the remainder of the landscaping is starting to come out of it's "cold" weather shell! Funny we live our lives so in tune with our surroundings. No coincidence that the pool heater has been pumping the natural gas the last two weekends as well. We enjoyed a full day of soccer, skating and swimming with friends yesterday. Today will likely be a zoo day followed by more swimming and Wii.

The warm weather gets Dad in a good mood as well since the dolphin (mahi) and tuna should be working their way in our direction. Itching to get offshore. Ahhh, if we could just get a little rain. The combination of three months in a dry air cycle, the addition of hot sun and you get very, very dry Florida.....fire season is here. Only a couple small ones to date, but keep your fingers crossed, it's shaping up to be a potentially bad spring.

The spare bedroom is also warming up for the spring season, a few bookings are on the calendar, but there's always room for more. If you're around, drop us a line and check out a night at the Cheek's B&B

Kayak Day

Jennifer, the always wonderful Mom that she is, gave me a hall pass last Sunday to take advantage of a couple hours of the perfect kayaking weather in Florida right now.
I dumped the boat in around 6:45 in the Banana River (second body of water you pass over between our house and the beach) and paddled North. The relatively cool water temps still keep things quiet in the morning. Think about how motivated you are to get out of a warm bed into the cold house at the crack of dawn. Fish are no different. They all stay put until the sun climbs and gets the flats "heater" turned on. So, I was ready for long paddle and didn't mind that there was little to fish for in the first couple hours. There's always so much to see in the Lagoon. This time of year we become the equivalent of the Miami Airport, but for bird immigration. Thousands of birds flying overhead all morning long. The greatest show was a covey of ducks that had a white underbelly with black top wings. They don't glide well, so there is rapid flapping. The sun was just right so when they opened their wings, they blended into the sky and disappeared. On the down flap the black wing flashed. There were probably 500 birds and you can imagine the sight. It was sparkling.
I was lucky to paddle past a couple of white pelicans, strange visitors to the Space Coast. Their smaller cousins, the grey variety, are most common and always around. The much larger whites are common 30 miles to the South, but we are definitely a N boundary for the bird. Don't get your global warming ire up. Although they are rare, they've been taking spring vacations to our waters for many years.
Next came the largest school of manatee I've ever seen. Must have been 30 of them eating the seagrass and generally just hanging out. Fun to sit and watch until one curious, 200# mammal bumped my kayak....makes you remember how small you are. Gentle creatures can still unnerve you. I spent most the rest of the morning enjoying watching others fish, something mesmerizing about watching the rhythm of a couple fly fisherman wind and throw. Flats boats poled along the shore, mostly just scaring up stingrays and puffer fish (always plentiful in the river). I paddled back as the wind started to pick up. I hit one of my favorite canals, and as usual there were schools of small seatrout patrolling the docks. Unfortunately, a pair of dolphin made reservations for the same restaurant that morning. I couldn't get more than two into the boat before they showed up and wrecked the buffet. Is is fairly amazing to watch two dolphin corner a school of fish and chow down. They, like their friends the manatee, made some curiously close runs by my kayak to let me know seating for people is limited at this location. I managed a couple more fish and headed home. Good call as the wind picked up again and paddling became work. As many of you always hear, fishing is so much more than catching fish. Days like this one move the purchase of a boat way up on the priority list. The only improvement to the morning would have been sharing it with the boys.

What a fun evening! Jennifer "won" a picture session with a local photographer at a charity event for the Zoo last year. So, last night we headed up to Indialantic and we cashed in the family shoot on the beach. Afterward, the boys enjoyed running around and checking out all the cool stuff washed up on the beach. It has been at least 3 months since they've played in the ocean, so to a 6 and 7 year old, everything is new again! After the beach trip we headed over to LongDoggers (shack across the street from the beach with tables) and enjoyed Beer and Burgers (Milk and Soda for the boys). Here are some pics we took.

Let Spring begin?

This weekend is supposedly the last bit of "chilly" weather we'll encounter for the year. I'm speaking for the plants of course. We (the people) experienced the last chilly weather with some low 50 degree stuff a couple weeks back. Tonight and tomorrow mark the last sub 50 evening weather we should have this winter. When the evenings don't drop below 60 and the ground warms to that temp, everything springs to life in FL. When the palms start moving, you're there. We planted our herb seeds last weekend along with a sunflower or two. We're trying out a few new things this spring with a couple mangrove trees from seed pods the boys and I collected from the river. We've put together a little orchid garden (up to 4 species now). I'm even trying a little one in a tree. OK, enough of the gardening and rub it in your face warm weather comments. Life's not all flowers and pineapples (did I mention I'm growing one of those,too?)

The boys are in full stride with Soccer, Hockey and Skating lessons taking up much of the weekend. Pics to follow. The beach has tempted us on several occasions, but at 70 degrees, the water's still a little cold. We're taking full advantage of the Zoo, along with thousands of other people. If the new kids area gets any more attendance, we'll have to start limiting entrants.....good things for the zoo during this tough economy.

That's the update for the night. Not much else going on. Looking forward to a full weekend and busy March.

Wii Showdown II

There's a reason Vegas makes money folks, they know how to pick 'um. Saturday night provided a better showing from Fuzz (aka Aunt Lauren), but in the end, Squaky and Soph/Todo ruled the night. Alex raced as Squakasaur. Brayden, showing some degree of difficulty choosing from his myriad of Miis (there's probably 50+) went to the venerable Soph/Todo. They both did mighty damage to the best Chicago has to offer. Thanks for a great match Aunt Lauren! Whatcha doing next weekend?
